A Short Break to Billund: LEGO Magic, Waterparks & Forest Fun

Billund is a town in Jutland, Denmark, with a population of 7,484. It is one of those places where everything just works for a great short break. It’s compact, creative, easy to get around, and packed with brilliant things to do; from LEGO House and the original LEGOLAND to huge indoor waterparks, forest adventure parks, and peaceful Danish trails. Whether you’re planning a quick weekend away or a school‑holiday escape, Billund is the kind of trip that feels fun, relaxed, and surprisingly effortless.

How to get to Billund, Denmark, from the UK

When we visited Billund, we’d already spent a few days exploring Copenhagen and had hired a car at the airport. The drive across to Jutland took around three hours, but it was an easy, scenic journey and a lovely way to see more of Denmark. Those long bridges stretching over the water are an experience in themselves.

If you’re travelling from the UK, Copenhagen often has the best choice of flights and the lowest fares, especially now that Ryanair no longer flies into Billund. Most routes take roughly two hours, depending on your departure airport.

That said, for a quick weekend escape, flying straight into Billund makes life much simpler. Direct flights from London Heathrow with British Airways take about 1 hour 40 minutes, and Norwegian Air also runs direct services from Gatwick. If we were planning the trip again, this is probably the option we’d choose; the flight is shorter, and the airport is so close to everything. LEGOLAND is only about a 30‑minute walk from the terminal, though most families will find it easier to hop in a taxi.

Just keep in mind that flights to Billund aren’t as frequent as Copenhagen, and LEGOLAND Billund doesn’t operate year‑round, so it’s worth checking opening dates before you book.

LEGO House sits right in the centre of Billund, and the building itself is the first thing that catches your eye, a stack of white, block‑like structures that look as if they’ve been clicked together. Inside, the space is open and bright, with different LEGO activity rooms. Each area has its own feel: some are quiet and focused, others are full of movement and sound. You can build small models, experiment with simple machines, create digital characters or wander through displays that show how LEGO has evolved over the years. There’s no rush to move through it, and most people end up spending longer than they expect because there’s always another corner to explore or another activity to try. At LEGO House, we ended up spending far longer than planned. Every time we thought we were done, someone spotted another fun activity. 2. LEGOLAND Billund – The Original & Still the Best

LEGOLAND Billund sits just outside the centre of Billund and has a very classic, nostalgic feel to it. The park is spread across a series of themed areas, with gentle rides, small coasters and plenty of places to stop and look at the details. Miniland is usually the first thing people head for. This is a collection of miniature cities and landmarks built entirely from LEGO, with moving boats, trains and tiny scenes tucked into the models. The rest of the park mixes outdoor rides with indoor attractions, so it works in most kinds of weather. It’s easy to wander between areas without feeling rushed. What stands out most is how easy the park is to navigate; nothing feels too far apart, and the atmosphere is relaxed even on busy days. We actually prefer LEGOLAND Billund to the one in Windsor, UK – this post highlights why, especially for older children.

3. Lalandia – Waterparks, Ice Skating & Indoor Fun

Lalandia is a large indoor resort complex, and the waterpark is the part most people come for. Inside, it’s warm and bright, with slides, wave pools and quieter areas for younger children. Beyond the waterpark, there are other activities dotted around the building, things like mini golf, bowling and an ice rink, so it’s a useful option if the weather turns or you want a slower day. The holiday homes on site are spaced out around small paths and green areas, giving it a more open feel than you might expect from a big resort.

Some areas are high up, others are closer to the ground, and there’s plenty of space for children to explore at their own pace. It’s the kind of attraction where you can spend a couple of hours or most of the day, depending on how much climbing and running around your family enjoys. The atmosphere is very low‑key, with lots of open space and fresh air.

5. Givskud Zoo – A Safari‑Style Day Out

A short drive from Billund, you will find Givskud Zoo, which is a mix of drive‑through safari sections and walk‑around enclosures. On foot, the paths are easy to follow and take you past a range of animals, as well as a dinosaur‑themed area that younger children tend to enjoy. It’s a straightforward, spacious zoo with a slower pace than many larger European parks, making it a comfortable half‑day or full‑day trip from Billund.

6. Billund Skulpturpark – A Calm, Free Walk

Billund Sculpture Park is a quiet, tree‑lined path that links the town centre with Lalandia and LEGOLAND. The route winds gently through a stretch of woodland, with sculptures placed at intervals along the way. Some pieces are easy to spot, others sit a little further back among the trees, so the walk has a slow, exploratory feel to it. It’s an easy route for children, with plenty of space to pause, look around or run ahead. Most people take it at a relaxed pace, and it’s a pleasant way to break up the day between the busier attractions.

Where to Stay

LEGOLAND Castle Hotel

The LEGOLAND Castle Hotel is one of the most convenient places to stay in Billund, and the theming is a big part of the experience. The rooms are surprisingly spacious, with plenty of storage and little LEGO details tucked into the décor. Outside, there are play areas where children can run around while you take a breather, and the buffet restaurant works well for families who want something easy at the end of a busy day. It’s an uncomplicated, comfortable base, and being able to walk straight to the park is a real bonus. We had a lovely stay here when we went to LEGOLAND, Billund.

Lalandia Holiday Homes

The Lalandia holiday homes are set around quiet paths and small green spaces, giving the whole area a relaxed, village‑like feel. The houses themselves are simple and spacious. Having your own kitchen makes mealtimes easy, and it’s nice to have a bit of outdoor space where children can play while you get organised. Being able to walk to the waterpark and the rest of the resort is a real bonus, and it works especially well for longer stays where you want a bit more breathing room than a hotel can offer.

Hotel Svanen

Hotel Svanen has a more grown‑up feel than the themed hotels, with a cosy Scandinavian style that works well if you want somewhere quieter to unwind. The rooms are simple and comfortable, and the layout of the hotel makes it easy to come and go without any fuss. There are small seating areas dotted around the building, and the restaurant is a nice option if you want an easy dinner without heading back into town. It’s still close enough to walk to the main attractions, but it offers a calmer base at the end of a busy day.

Getting Around Billund Without a Car

Walking – Most of Billund’s main attractions are close together, and the town is flat and easy to navigate.

Local Buses – There are buses, but they’re mainly for travelling to nearby towns rather than hopping between attractions.

Taxis – Easy to find at the airport and handy if you’re carrying luggage or have tired kids.

Billund is an easy, low‑stress destination with plenty to keep you busy for a weekend or longer. Everything is close together, the atmosphere is relaxed, and there’s a good mix of indoor and outdoor activities, so you’re never stuck for ideas, whatever the weather does.
