LEGOLAND Castle Hotel in Billund Denmark My Review

For the ultimate LEGO experience, you can stay in two different LEGO-themed hotels at LEGOLAND Billund, Denmark. There is the LEGO Hotel, which is 4* and the Castle Hotel, which is 3* (although we’d give it more). After much deliberation, I decided to book the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel, and I wasn’t disappointed. If you do decide to stay at one of their hotels, make sure you have time in your stay to enjoy it. It’s not cheap, and your children will love spending time in your room, playing on the outdoor playground and generally exploring.

What and where is the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel Billund?

Did you know that Billund is the home of LEGO? Not only that, but the resort is located just a short distance from Billund’s LEGO factory. LEGOLAND Billund was the very first LEGOLAND theme park to be built, and it opened in 1968. The Castle Hotel is the newest of the 2 official LEGOLAND hotels, and it opened in 2019.

Located over the road from the main entrance to LEGOLAND Billund, the Castle Hotel is well situated. It took us just 4 minutes to walk there. Outside of the hotel, you can hear the planes on the runway at the very local Billund Airport. It takes about 40 minutes to walk from the airport to the hotel, so if you fly into this airport, you may want to take a taxi. You can also fly into Copenhagen Airport, which is a 3-hour drive from the hotel.

Another option is to take a bus from the airport. Buses 43, 143, 166, and 944X will take you directly from Billund Airport to LEGOLAND, and the journey takes approximately 8 minutes, with a single adult fare of €2.70 (DKK 19.50). You can check out the bus information here. If you are thinking of visiting with older children, we can say for sure that this park is far better than LEGOLAND Windsor. The Castle hotel is made up of two buildings. There is the main building with around half of the rooms, plus this is where you will find reception, the restaurant and a small shop. There are 142 themed rooms, and you can choose between three different themes: The Dragon Knight’s Room, The Princess’s Room and The Wizard’s Room. Some of the rooms are accessible.

Our room at the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel – The Dragon Knight’s Room

Parking was easy at the hotel, and it is included in your stay. Because of the proximity to the theme park, you will need to register your car’s details at reception. We had driven over from Copenhagen, and we had no issues parking our hire car.

As you walk towards the hotel, you will spot a fun playground for the kids and a number of large LEGO sculptures. As you get closer to the sculptures, you will hear a number of ‘castle’ themed sound effects. My son, aged 9, loved these and would spend ages making sure they kept making their noises. He also had great fun posing with the sculptures.

There’s some great theming throughout this hotel. The lobby entrance area had a LEGO-themed fireplace, and there were LEGO building stations dotted around. Once we had checked in, we were given a key card for our room. Even the corridor was embracing the theme, and there were flickering LEGO sconce-lights and decorative walls and carpet.

Our room was an accessible room. I’m not sure why we were in an accessible room; surely it’s best left for someone who needs one. It was, however, fantastic. They have gone all-out with the LEGO theming. We entered next to the open wardrobe, and immediately to our right was the children’s area.

Our room was huge, and it could sleep up to 6 people. There were two sets of bunk beds which sleep up to 4 children. They have their own TV to share, individual lights above their beds, a box of LEGO to play with and a panel to stick their creations to.

We also discovered that the locked safe was supposed to be part of a treasure quest where children can uncover clues and then enter a code to win a prize. I wonder if this was a ‘thing’ when we were staying, as there was no information about it. They have smaller rooms with 1 bunk bed for 2 children.

In between the adults’ bedroom and the kids’ bedroom, there was a large shower room. Which you can see from the photo below, has been made incredibly accessible. They had supplied tissues, soap, plenty of towels, and there was a hairdryer next to the sink.

There was no dividing door or wall throughout the whole room, aside from the shower room, which is fully enclosed within the room with a door into it. The adults’ bedroom area was huge and full of even more great LEGO theming. Plus, the bed was big and super comfy. A particular highlight was the dragon picture above the bed that you could light up.

Eating at the hotel

Breakfast is included when you book the LEGOLAND Billund Castle Hotel through the official LEGOLAND website. We had booked a two-night stay for our visit, which my son was really pleased about as he loves a buffet breakfast. This was a particularly good breakfast with plenty of choice, including hot food.

Make sure you pre-book your sitting as there are three to choose from. We booked the first sitting just before 8 a.m., which was much quieter than the later sittings. In the restaurant, there is a small play area which was always really busy, so I wasn’t able to take a photo of it.

When I booked our room, I also booked our package to include an evening meal for each night. There is little choice close to the hotel, so if you are staying over, I recommend booking this. It was a buffet, but it was excellent. We loved the choices available, and it also included unlimited wine and beer, plus soft drinks. The doughnuts for dessert were a particular highlight.

I paid £50 for myself for dinner and £22.50 for my son for dinner. Sure, it’s on the pricier side, but including drinks, it was more than worth it. Plus, you can have three courses! Prices are subject to change. You can even pay to have your minibar filled with drinks, although this option isn’t cheap!

What we liked most about the hotel

The LEGOLAND Castle Hotel felt so clean and well-maintained, and our room was spotless. The outdoor play areas are certainly a bonus, and they have something for everyone, even my 9-year-old! The theming of the hotel is excellent, especially all the sounds that come from various LEGO sculptures. This place will set alight your children’s imaginations, and adults will love staying here as much as the kids.

We all really enjoyed both breakfast and dinner, and I loved that our upgraded package included our room, our breakfast and our evening meal with drinks. The location and proximity to the airport and the LEGOLAND theme park are also excellent. It’s certainly well situated. Still not sure LEGOLAND Billund is for you?
