Efteling’s Best Rides: The Ultimate Guide for All Ages

Efteling in the Netherlands is packed with incredible rides, but knowing where to start can feel overwhelming. We love Efteling so much that we’ve already been three times with plans to return again soon. Our son has been a good range of ages during these visits, so I can highlight rides for different ages. One of the things we love most about Efteling is just how much variety there is: slow rides packed with things to look at, fun family attractions, water rides, and proper thrill rides that get your heart going.

Our top three, now he’s older, are De Vliegende Hollander, Python, and Max & Moritz, each for totally different reasons. De Vliegende Hollander is such a standout: part dark ride, part water coaster, and completely atmospheric from the moment you step into the queue. Python is your classic big coaster with upside down loops, it’s fast, smooth and a huge hit with the teens. Max & Moritz is the perfect family coaster, fun and silly with just enough speed to keep everyone happy. It’s that mix of storytelling, theming and thrills that makes Efteling feel so easy to enjoy, no matter who you’re visiting with. The Best Rides at Efteling for all ages

Gondoletta – Boat Ride – Any height

Children under 1.20m can only ride with supervision. This gentle 20‑minute boat ride quickly became one of our favourites. We usually go on at least 2-3 times, and we always bring food to feed the ducks, which makes the slow loop around the lake even more fun. The boats can hold quite a few people, and although there are signs saying you may need to share, we always end up with a boat to ourselves, even when it is busy. It’s a really pretty, peaceful ride and a perfect chance to rest your legs, highly recommended when you need a breather.

Symbolica – Palace of Fantasy – No height limit

Children under 1.20m can only ride with supervision. This is one of Efteling’s most popular attractions, think Harry Potter meets elves. You start in a large pre‑show room with an introduction in Dutch and English, plus an appearance from the Efteling Jester. The stairs then part, smoke rolls in, and you choose your path, which changes the ride slightly. You board a car that seats at least six people; the front row has an interactive element, though the back doesn’t. You glide through a series of beautifully themed rooms, even circling a dancefloor as if joining the characters.

Fata-morgana – Dark Ride indoors – Any height

Children under 1.20m can only ride with supervision, and there are a few spooky effects to be aware of. We nicknamed this one “Ali Baba” because it’s a long, atmospheric boat ride with a brilliant Arabian theme. It usually opens early for hotel guests, so we have never queued for this ride. The theme tune is incredibly catchy, and although it’s too dark inside for decent photos, the theming and animatronics are excellent, definitely worth doing.

Carnaval Festival – Dark Ride indoors – Any height

Children under 1.00m can only ride with supervision. If you’ve ever been on It’s a Small World at Disneyland or Disney World, you’ll recognise the style of this ride, but Efteling’s version is longer, more detailed and, honestly, even better. You sit two to a car on a continuous loop, passing through colourful scenes from around the world. When he was younger, it was one of our son’s absolute favourites; his face lit up every time a new set of characters appeared. It’s not really a ride for teens, though.

Sirocco – Rotating Merchant Boats – Any height

Children under 1.00m can only ride with supervision. This ride is Efteling’s take on the classic teacups, but with a Sindbad twist. You hop into a little boat and spin your carts as much as you can handle. It’s fun, colourful and brilliantly themed, and we loved the attention to detail throughout.

De-Oude-Tufferbaan – Classic car ride – Any height

Children under 1.20m can only ride under supervision. This is one of those simple, charming rides that everyone ends up loving. You hop into a little vintage car and take a slow ride around an outdoor track, steering as you go (even though the car stays on rails). It’s slow, sweet and perfect for younger kids who like the feeling of “driving” their own car.

Anton Pieck Plein – Historic Carousels – Any height

Children under 1.00m can only ride with supervision. This little area was such a lovely surprise, and we ended up spending more time here than expected. It has five old‑fashioned fairground rides, including two swing rides, two beautiful carousels and a classic wooden cart ride that bumps gently up, down and around a small track. One of the carousels had gorgeous moving horses, plus a rather charming chicken that our son once became completely obsessed with.

Stoomtrein – Tour through Efteling – Any height

We’ve been on this steam train so many times! On our first visit, it was really easy to use, but on our most recent trip, there was only one train running, so if you missed it, you’d be waiting around 25 minutes and often struggling to find a seat. We still did a full loop each day, and even used it a couple of times just to get from the top of the park to the middle‑left area. It would be handy to have a stop near the entrance, too. The best bits are the sounds of the steam, the chugging engine and the whistle, plus the little Efteling station you pass through with moving characters.

Pagode – Thai temple with high panoramic views – Any height

Children under 1.00m can only ride with supervision. This isn’t a thrill ride, which meant my husband was more than happy to come on it, but it does take you surprisingly high, reaching around 40 metres. You can stay seated or stand to look over the barrier, and once you’re up there, you get some brilliant views across Efteling.

Villa Volta – Mad House Indoors – Any height

Children under 1.00m can only ride with supervision. This ride is similar to Hex at Alton Towers, very clever and a bit disorientating. You move through a few themed rooms before sitting on long benches facing each other, the bar comes down, and the rocking begins. Then the whole room starts to rotate, and scenes appear from every angle.

Droomvlucht – Dark Ride – No height limit

The queue for this ride can build up quickly, so it’s worth doing early in the day. We didn’t on our second visit and ended up waiting around 40 minutes; it’s not really worth that long a queue. Each car seats a family of four, and you glide along as if flying among fairies and elves. The highlight comes after a gentle climb, when you suddenly spiral downwards like a helter‑skelter, circling closer and closer to a group of elves. It’s another indoor dark ride, so photos are pretty much impossible.

Family‑Friendly Rides at Efteling for Kids Taking the Next Step

Max & Moritz – Family Roller Coaster – Minimum height 1m

Children between 1.00m and 1.30m must ride with someone aged 16 or over. Max & Moritz is a fun double roller coaster where the whole family can join in for a silly, mischievous ride. You can choose either the Max track or the Moritz track; both are equally chaotic. My husband enjoyed this one the most. It was a bit tame for my son and me, but it’s a great option for younger riders or anyone who prefers something gentler than the big thrill coasters.

Piraña – River Rapids – Any height

Children under 1.20m need supervision, and those under 1.00m must sit on an adult’s lap. Piraña is a long river rapids ride with six‑seater boats, and you will get wet. Whether it’s a light splash or a full soaking depends entirely on where the water hits. We had five in our boat and ended up absolutely drenched, but it was all part of the fun, and we dried quickly in the warm weather. The rapids feel surprisingly realistic, and we couldn’t stop laughing when our boat kept getting stuck alongside others. You don’t get thrown around too much, so aside from very young children, it’s a ride most families can enjoy. This is quite an intense ride, and you get jostled around a lot.

Vogel Rok – Indoor Rollercoaster – Minimum height 1.20m

Minimum height 1.20m. One thing Efteling does brilliantly is keep rides moving, and this coaster is no exception. There are two trains running on the indoor track, so even when there’s a queue, it moves quickly. Most of the ride takes place in complete darkness, which makes the first go pretty intense, but there are no big drops, and it runs incredibly smoothly. We all love this ride and tend to go on it a few times in a row when it’s just opened for the day.

Efteling’s Fastest, Wildest & Most Intense Rides

Dance Macabre – Haunted dark ride – Minimum Height 1.20m

Danse Macabre is one of Efteling’s newest attractions, and we haven’t managed to ride it yet. I’ve heard thatthe queues have been huge since it opened. It’s not a coaster, but it is intense: dark, atmospheric and full of suspense, with dramatic storytelling and clever, disorientating movement. From everything we’ve heard, it’s better suited to older children or confident younger riders who already enjoy immersive, slightly spooky attractions. We can’t wait to try it on our next visit.

Python – Steel Rollercoaster – Minimum height 1.20m

Recently, this has become our favourite ride at Efteling. I love a good looping coaster, especially a smooth one, and this ticks every box. Our son even braved it again after being put off when he rode it a bit too young. With two full loops and two half loops, it looks intense, but we never felt thrown around, and it’s brilliant fun. He now loves it too, and we ended up riding more than ten times in three days. We’ve never queued long for it, and it’s especially good at the end of the day as the park starts to get dark.

De Vliegende Hollander – Water Coaster – Minimum height 1.20m

This coaster runs on a traditional track but also plunges straight into the lake before finishing with a gentle boat ride around the water. There’s a lot of suspense and a real sense of the unknown; you never quite know when the drop is coming or what’s next, which I loved. It’s definitely one for thrill‑seekers, though some braver younger children might enjoy it too. You may get wet, but that’s all part of the fun.

Joris en de Draak – Wooden Rollercoaster – Minimum height 1.10m

This wooden coaster is huge, and while it doesn’t have any major drops, it’s very fast. There are two coasters running at the same time, racing each other around the track, which makes it even more exciting, especially if you’re competitive. It’s bumpy in that classic wooden‑coaster way, but still great fun, and some braver younger children might enjoy it too. We went on it far more during our recent visit and quickly learned the trick: don’t let the lap bar lock down too tightly. If it tightens up too much, the ride can get a bit uncomfortable. (Note it doesn’t go in the water; the cart in the water is from the water coaster ride above)

Baron 1898 – Dive Coaster – Minimum Height 1.40m

Baron 1898 is one of Efteling’s most dramatic coasters, a towering dive coaster themed around a haunted Dutch mine. Even from the outside, it’s impressive, with the huge vertical drop disappearing straight into a misty mineshaft. You hear the screams long before you see the train reappear. There’s a detailed pre‑show with miners, spirits and atmospheric storytelling, all building up to that famous 37.5‑metre plunge. We still haven’t been brave enough to try it ourselves, but it’s a firm favourite with thrill‑seekers and one of the park’s headline rides. If you love big drops and high‑speed dives, this is the one to aim for.

More Magic Beyond the Rides

Efteling isn’t just about the rides; there’s so much more to explore between the coasters and family attractions. The Fairytale Forest is a must‑do, especially if you’re visiting with younger kids or anyone who loves that classic Efteling storytelling. It’s full of little surprises, moving scenes and beautifully detailed sets that feel like stepping into a storybook. We also loved wandering through the different themed areas, catching the smaller shows, and just soaking up the atmosphere. Even simple things like the music, the hidden playgrounds and the quirky details (such as the talking bins) make it feel like you’re discovering something new around every corner.

The Fairytale Forest

The forest at Efteling is where the story of Efteling began. The Fairytale Forest was the very first attraction created here, and you can still feel that original magic as you wander along the winding paths. Classic scenes like Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, the Talking Tree and Long Neck are dotted throughout, each tucked into its own little clearing. Make sure you explore every corner so that you don’t miss anything. There’s even a slow ride in here and a donkey that shoots coins out of itself. You need to allow a decent amount of time to visit the forest, and there’s a handy place for a halfway stop with snacks and drinks.

Shows at Efteling

Efteling isn’t just about rides; the shows add a whole extra layer of magic to the day. From the huge Aquanura water show, which lights up the lake each evening with fountains, music and colour, to the dramatic Raveleijn stunt show with horses and a fire‑breathing monster, there’s always something happening around the park. Younger children love the Jokie & Jet shows, while Pardoes the Magician pops up for meet‑and‑greets and little performances throughout the day. You’ll also find charming touches like the Anton Pieck puppet theatre and roaming storytellers in the Fairytale Forest.

Most of Efteling’s shows are performed in Dutch, but the good news is that you can still follow almost all of them without needing to understand the language.

Efteling really does offer something for everyone, whether you’re a thrill‑seeker or visiting with little ones just starting out on gentler rides. From high‑speed coasters and dramatic new attractions to story‑filled forests and beautifully themed indoor adventures, the park balances excitement with charm in a way few places manage. Even after multiple visits, there’s always something new to discover and something familiar to fall in love with all over again. It’s a place where every age finds a favourite, and where the magic genuinely lingers long after you’ve left. We love Disney, but Efteling always has our heart.
